Live Review: Claudia Kate @ ACM's Summer Live

Claudia Kate, in all her glitter and glory, shone on the Electric Theatre stage for ACM's Summer Live. The multi-instrumentalist, singer/songwriter showcased her incredible lyricism with three songs that took the audience (who she can easily silence with her voice) to the most reflective parts in their own minds, and left a few tears to be had.

She uses music as a kind of therapy when she has a lot of thoughts to process and, as a result, her songs are thought-provoking, relatable and sentimental.

The set opens with 'Sunrise', a song she wrote about a friend who went through a tough break up, where she likens the sunrise to a new beginning. In the chorus she sings "I can't help thinking you're the flowers and I'm the dirt," and by the end sings, "I will grow these flowers out of stones/ And I will wake up feeling clean," which really highlights the feeling of things coming full circle.

She then moves across to the keyboard for 'Don't Go', inspired by the quote from The Perks Of Being A Wallflower: "We accept the love we think we deserve." Her lyrics "Please don't go, 'cause I'm out of places to run," sung with emotional cracks in her voice, tells of how people look for love in the wrong places and don't treat themselves right.

Her final song, as of yet untitled, is an uncharacteristically hopeful song about looking for the light in life and appreciating how lucky you are to be alive and healthy. As she sings, "I am a child of the sun and my life has just begun," and, "I am a child of the sun/ One day I'll be old and wish I was young," I silently will my eyes to not let the tears spill down my cheeks. She can sure write some pretty powerful songs.

19-year-old Claudia Kate is a Cambridge native, now a local in the Guildford scene, and making a name for herself in London. She has been described by friends as "the lovechild of Fleetwood Mac and alt-J". She uses music as a kind of therapy when she has a lot of thoughts to process (don't we all?) and, as a result, her songs are thought-provoking, relatable and sentimental.
